Located in sunny Central Florida, the Walt Disney World® Resort opened on October 1, 1971 with one theme park, three themed resort hotels and an 18-hole golf course. Today, the popular vacation destination features four world-class theme parks, two highly-themed water parks, five championship golf courses, 30+ themed resort hotels and an outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment complex.
Theme Parks
The Walt Disney World® Resort consists of four world-class theme parks. Magic Kingdom® Park, the first Disney theme park to open in Florida, features a variety of attractions and live entertainment based on fairy tales as well as many popular Disney characters. The second theme park to open, Epcot®, features a number of attractions and live entertainment split into two sections; one dedicated to technological innovation and the other showcasing international culture.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios® opened next with attractions and live entertainment based on old Hollywood and the art of making movies. Today, the theme park features popular Disney brands such as Star Wars and Pixar Animation Studios. The fourth and most recent theme park to open, Disney’s Animal Kingdom®, is themed entirely around animal conservation.
Water Parks
The Walt Disney World® Resort includes two themed water parks. Disney’s River Country was the first water park to open at the resort; however, the water park has since closed permanently. The second water park to open, Typhoon Lagoon, includes one of the world’s largest outdoor wave pools and is themed after a pristine tropical paradise that was recently wrecked by a typhoon.
The third and most recent water park to open, Blizzard Beach, features one of the world’s tallest and fastest water slides and is themed after a one-time ski resort that melted into a watery wonderland.
Shopping, Dining & Entertainment
In addition to theme parks and water parks, the Walt Disney World® Resort also offers a variety of additional options. Disney Springs offers outdoor shopping, dining and live entertainment themed after a charming waterfront town built around bubbling springs. Disney’s Boardwalk offers limited shopping, dining and live entertainment themed after a turn-of-the-century boardwalk reminiscent of Coney Island.
The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is an athletic complex that hosts numerous amateur and professional sporting events throughout the year. The Walt Disney World® Resort also offers a variety of Sports & Recreation options including four 18-hole golf courses, a nine-hole walking course and two themed miniature golf complexes.
